Market outlook

In 2021, the EV charging adapter market was worth USD 7,673.5 million, and by 2030, it is expected to reach a net value of USD XXX.X million by the end of 2030, with a solid compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 27.8% during that period. The fluctuation of raw material prices, as well as the absence of proper charging infrastructure, are expected to restrain the market of electric vehicle charging adapters in the coming years. The EV charging adapter market is not only limited to battery-powered vehicles. For example, a plug-in hybrid does not necessarily require an expensive charger as compared to a fully electric car. COVID-19 had a mixed effect on the market. Initially lockdowns caused a dip in demand, but with the easing of restrictions, there was a surge in demand for EVs around the world, creating a promising market for charging adapters. Despite the pandemic, EV sales have been on the rise over the last few years. For example, in 2021, the global EV sales reached 8.97m units, which is significantly higher than the sales in 2020. This volume covers all segments, such as passenger vehicles, LCA, and light trucks, as well as all types of propulsion. North America & Europe are expected to continue to lead the market. In North America & Europe, the demand for EVs is already high due to government regulations & initiatives. Asia-Pacific is expected to see a huge growth during the forecast period due to the development of EVs in key countries such as China, India, and Singapore.

Market Dynamics

Drivers

The electric vehicle (EV) charging cable market is driven by the global shift towards electric vehicles (EV). As more and more people adopt electric vehicles (EVs), there is a growing demand for EV charging cables and charging infrastructure. Governments all over the world are providing incentives, subsidies and tax breaks for EV adoption. Consumers and organizations are increasingly aware of environmental concerns and want to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. This is driving the demand for EV charging cable and infrastructure. The development of a large-scale charging network, which includes public charging stations as well as fast-charging hub locations, increases the need for EV charging cables. To connect to these charging stations, people need reliable charging cables.

Challenges

The cost of home chargers is prohibitive and hampers the growth of the market for home EV charging adapter. However, with the rebate, tax credit, and other incentives available, home EV chargers may be worth the investment. Another major issue is the availability and affordability of charging infrastructure, particularly fast-charging stations. Many regions don’t have enough charging stations, which may discourage EV adoption.

Opportunity

There's a huge demand for electric vehicles right now, and it looks like these regions are going to be the ones leading the way. Home EV chargers are becoming more and more popular, especially if you live in places that don't have much charging infrastructure or don't have access to public charging ports. Plus, you don't have to wait in line to use a public charger - you can charge whenever you want! That's why there's so much demand for EV charging cables.

Segment Insights

Electric vehicle charging adapters are a type of connection between a charging socket and a charger to give electric charging to cars and other vehicles. The market for these adapters is divided into different types based on the type of vehicle, application, adapter, and geographic location. For example, if you're a passenger car or a commercial vehicle, you'll need one of these adapters. If you're looking for a home charging system, you'll need an AC Level 1 adapter, an AC Level 2 adapter, or a DC adapter. The Type 1, Type 2, Type 3, and Type 4 Connector types are SAE J1772, Type 2, IEC 62196, Type 3, Scame, CCS, and CHAdeMO respectively. Depending on the type of cable, Short cables are suitable for home charging and certain public charging stations, Medium cables are suitable for a broader range of applications, such as public and workplace charging, and Long cables are designed to be flexible and suitable for a variety of charging scenarios, such as commercial and public charging points. Depending on the Electric Vehicle Type, there are various types available, such as Battery Electric Vehicles, Hybrid Electric Vehicles, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles, and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles.

Recent Developments

March 2023- An Automated Charging Robot (ACR) has been developed by Hyundai Motor Group, a leading global automotive manufacturer, to facilitate the charging of electric vehicles. This one-arm robot is capable of connecting a cable to an EV's charging port and removing the cable when the charging process is completed. The robot communicates with the vehicle to access the charging port and calculates the exact location and orientation of the charging port using a camera mounted inside the vehicle. The robot then lifts the charger and attaches it to the vehicle's charging port, initiating the charging session. After the charging process is complete, the robot removes the charger, places it back in its rightful position, and seals the cover of the charging port.

March 23- Chalmers University researchers in Sweden have announced the completion and commercial scale production of a wireless charging equipment that can charge batteries up to 500 kW without the need to connect them to a charger through a cable. The charging equipment is not intended to be used to charge personal passenger cars. Instead, it could be used to charge electric ferries and buses, as well as self-driving vehicles used in mining and agriculture, without the need for a robotic arm or a plug-in.

July 2022- Phihong, a leading global provider of power products and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, launched in July 2022 a new 65W (2C1A) USB PD adapter powered by Transphorm® Gen IV SuperGaN technology. In addition to the advantages of a simple system design and lower system components, the GaNFET platform offers
